#1. Do your research about where in S.A you want to go, S.A has 9 provinces/states & MANY cities.

#2. Find accommodation in SA while you're still in Nigeria.

#3. Have a plan on how you will earn an income. S.A has high unemployment, having your own business is highly recommended.

#4. Find out local prices & Naira equivalent while you're still in Nigeria, e.g. taxi fare, airtime/credit, food, accommodation.

#5. Change to the local currency (Rand) at the airport to AVOID PAYING IN DOLLARS.

#6. Buy a South African sim card for your phone at the airport.

#7. Do not let anyone keep you indoors or collect money to go buy things on your behalf.

#8. Ask many questions & go out to malls, parks etc. to learn the area.

#9. Use your money wisely & sparingly, always spend in Rands, it is cheaper & safer.

#10. Always carry your passport with you.

#11. Remember that you have rights so do not let anyone bully you.

#12. Always confirm whatever you are told by locals & fellow Nigerians by doing a Google search or asking a question on www.lagostojozi.co.za

#13. Do not allow anyone take or keep your passport.

#14. Visit www.lagostojozi.co.za for advice about living in South Africa & where to find things. You can even make friends with Nigerian professional on the forum.

#15. East London in SA is not East London in Britain, do not be scammed.

#16. Avoid getting scammed. Get immigration advice from a professional, i.e. an immigration lawyer or a non-profit-organisation (NPO), NOT AN AGENT. Lawyers charge a small fee consultation fee & NPO's are free.

#17. Join an organisation for Nigerians, like the Nigerian Union South Africa, CLICK HERE to visit NUSA's website.

#18. Do not allow anyone to convince or force you to do any illegal activities or jobs.

#19. If you need help with seeking asylum visit Lawyers For Human Rights. They will help you for free, they are funded by the UN.

#20. Familiarise yourself with the S.A constitution, laws etc., know your rights & always abide by the law.

These tips are good i wish i knew them before i came to south africa. when first cam to SA i fell into the wrong hands, my own fellow nigerians dupe me by collecting money from pocket and saying they will buy groceries for me. they did this repeatedly until i found the courage to leave their house. i think was one of the lucky ones because i was brave enough to move out.
i am happy about this forum. oshe to the lagos to jozi team
